super duper graffiti project
The super duper graffiti project is a small print series that grew into a large participatory performance project.
I wanted to work on a new print series reflecting the public's current love affair with the art spectacle. This series is seen from the artworks perspective.
The images are a reflection of the art going audience, and there is a sense of self judgement underlying many of the portraits.
Do we go to the Spectacle for the art, or perhaps to see ourselves looking at art. Sometimes the art becomes so precious that we do not interact with it. The food trucks and huge crowds push crowds through the streets. When do we stop? What do we do besides look? What happens after the event?
Super Duper Graffiti Project
I printed seven sets of the three images from a series titled Mirror on the Spectacle, onto MacTac adhesive paper. The paper wrapped beautifully around the concrete hydro poles which are located off of James Street North in Hamilton, Canada and can be easily removed.
Re-titled for the Friday evening of Supercrawl 2014, #thesuperdupergraffitiproject was a resounding success. A call went out for participants a few days before the event and 7 teams gathered at my studio entrance. They were given loot bags with directions, Sharpie Markers and Gummie Bears and asked to colour, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook their process/progress from 10:00 pm-10:30 pm. Short and sweet. Many participants were wary of colouring onto the artwork and were persuaded by Team Leaders to dive in. All prints looked amazing and were on view for the rest of the weekend.
Five of the seven poles are still in tact weeks later.
